Why am I experiencing irritation from using natural deodorant?
Great question! Every now and then we hear from customers who experience irritation after switching to natural deodorant. While most people don’t have an issue with natural deodorants, some do experience irritation or a rash when making the switch.
There are a variety of reasons why irritation can occur when making the switch to natural deodorant, below we have listed the most common reasons.
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is most likely the cause of underarm irritation when making the switch to natural deodorant. Baking soda is an alkaline, or basic, ingredient that sometimes doesn’t mix well with your body’s unique chemistry, which unfortunately causes irritation.
Baking soda is used in a lot of natural deodorants as a way to help reduce body odor and neutralize your naturally acidic skin. If it is the baking soda you are reacting with, then we do advise stopping the use of the product, and your irritation will subside.
We do offer a non-baking soda formula for those that still want natural deodorant, but have sensitive skin. You can find those here.
We do not use any fillers in our deodorants, which means it is much more concentrated than conventional deodorants and antiperspirants. We keep our deodorants simple- the less ingredients the better. Due to the higher concentration of our deodorant, a little bit goes a long way! If you are applying like you would your prior deodorants, you can experience a rash-like irritation. You only need 1-2 swipes to stay fresh all day!
Application After Shaving
For those that shave their underarms, you may notice irritation if you apply directly after shaving. Underarm skin is extremely sensitive and shaving can be an irritant on its own. Make sure to give yourself some time after you’re done shaving before applying.
While this isn’t as common, some people do find that they can react to certain essential oils. We use essential oils in our formula for our different scents. Certain essential oils have different natural compounds in them that people can be allergic to. We choose to use essential oils in our products because the alternative is using hundreds of primarily synthetic ingredients to come up with scent profiles. Check the back of your natural products, if “fragrance” is listed on the label even if it’s “natural fragrance” you can be sure that there are non-natural ingredients lingering in your product.
