Why is Natural Deodorant so Expensive?

Natural deodorant has become increasingly popular for many reasons, but something that sets it apart from conventional deodorant is not only the ingredient list, but the price tag. Some natural deodorants ring in anywhere from $8 a stick to $24+ a stick, and you might be wondering, it is actually worth it compared to its non-natural counterpart? The short answer is, it depends. Here are some considerations to make when transitioning from conventional deodorant to natural deodorant and whether or not the product justifies the price tag.

Does it actually work?

For many people, the most important thing when they buy a product is that it actually works. There are decades long stereotypes about natural deodorant and how they don’t work. Many people are skeptical of making the switch to natural deodorant due to these stereotypes, but there has been a lot of research done on which natural ingredients work best and natural deodorants have come a very long way over the years. Before purchasing a natural deodorant, check to see what the refund policy is. Unfortunately there isn’t a one-size-fits-all for natural deodorant because everyone’s body chemistry is different. However, a good money back guarantee will show that the company stands behind their product enough to take a loss on a sale if the product doesn’t work for you.

What American Provenance is doing:

Here at American Provenance, we stand behind our product and will do a full refund within 30 days of your purchase if our natural deodorant isn’t right for you. We have many testimonials from our customers that have been able to stop the search for the best natural deodorant when they came across our natural deodorant. We have spent many hours working on our formula and while we do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all deodorant, we do believe our formula is a leader in the natural deodorant space for efficacy.

Is it actually natural?

Natural products, whether food, personal care or clothing, tend to be higher in cost than their synthetic counterparts. The marketing world has taken over the natural product industry and taken the simple term “natural” and turned it into a marketing tactic. There are no regulations on what the term “natural” means when it comes to products you buy, so the consumer has to do the research on their own to figure out if a product is natural or not. Natural deodorants are products that are 100% natural, no synthetic ingredients or fragrances. There are many “natural” deodorants that use lab technologies to change a natural ingredient so much that it isn’t even recognizable as an ingredient. Many of the natural deodorants out there aren’t truly natural, so check out the ingredient list first, no need to spend more money on a product that is filled with synthetic or highly processed ingredients.

What American Provenance is doing:

If you flip over our natural deodorant, or any of our products, you will see our ingredients listed. All of our ingredients are 100% natural and we don’t hide behind terms such as “natural fragrance” when talking about scent. For transparency's sake, we list out each essential oil we use in our formula to show we have no synthetic ingredients hidden within our formula. We also keep our ingredient lists short, many "natural" deodorants have long lists of inactive ingredients also known as fillers. They don't serve a purpose in the formula but make it so you go through the product faster. Our ingredients are all active ingredients and a stick can last months. Our price per swipe can't be beat!

What are the business practices of the company?

Each company chooses to run their business in a certain way that will ultimately factor into their product pricing. How many employees do they have? Do they rent workspace, or work remotely? What are the wages and benefits they give their employees? Do they keep work in house or outsource? While some companies are far more transparent than others about these practices, these ultimately play a large role in product pricing.

What American Provenance is doing:

Here at American Provenance, the lowest wage we will pay an employee is $15/hour. We are manufacturers which means we pay for both production and warehouse space. We keep the majority of our manufacturing in house which provides jobs to those within our community and we aren’t outsourcing our products for machines to make. When we do have to outsource any products due to not having the proper technologies, we find other small, US based manufacturers that have similar values as us which typically means we pay more for their services. We have worked to keep majority of our production in house and purchased the proper equipment needed to do so.

Cost of Ingredients/Packaging

It may be surprising to hear this, but more expensive products aren’t necessarily using more expensive ingredients. Packaging costs will factor much higher into costs of products than the actual ingredients do.

What American Provenance is doing:

We take the time to look into our ingredient and packaging sources and try to stay local as often as we can. In addition to our traditional deodorant tubes, we also source biodegradable packaging from a company in Illinois to give different options to our customers. The biodegradable packaging is significantly more expensive than the traditional deodorant tubes, which is why you will see an increase in cost.

Cost of Marketing

This is ultimately where a lot of costs for products come from. Paying for digital and print advertising comes with very high price tags. “Top 10” lists typically are a pay-to-play, where the products you see featured aren’t necessarily there because they are one of the best, but because a brand pays for placement.

What American Provenance is doing:

As you have maybe seen, we pay for sponsored content on social media. It’s a way to get our products in front of more people and get them interested in trying out our products. All of our features in large publications have been earned media spots, which means we do not pay to get our products listed. We love that there are still editors out there looking for the best of the best products and are honored when our products make their lists!

We are always looking to be the most transparent as we can without giving away our trade secrets. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to us at hello@americanprovenance.com.
